Local Print Queue is the Windows component that holds print jobs before they are sent to a printer. Its driver support helps Windows recognize and manage the queue, while the printer manufacturer’s model-specific driver handles features such as paper selection, print quality, and duplex printing.

Key Features

  • Print job management: Supports the queue used to view pending documents and pause, resume, or cancel jobs through Windows printing controls.
  • Windows printing integration: Works with the Windows print system to pass queued documents to the configured printer.
  • Printer driver coordination: Works alongside the manufacturer’s printer driver, which supplies device-specific settings and converts documents into a format the printer understands.
  • Support across Windows versions: Local print queues are used in Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, although available drivers and installation methods depend on the printer model and operating system.

How to Install

  1. Identify the printer behind the queue. Open your Windows printer settings or Control Panel and check the printer model associated with Local Print Queue. The queue name alone does not identify the physical printer or the correct manufacturer driver.
  1. Check compatibility before downloading. Choose a driver for your exact printer model and Windows version. Confirm whether your system requires a 32-bit or 64-bit package; Windows 11 requires a compatible 64-bit or ARM64 driver, depending on the device.
  1. Install the printer software. Run the manufacturer’s installer, if provided, and follow its prompts. Connect a USB printer when instructed, or make sure a network printer is powered on and reachable.
  1. Add or refresh the printer in Windows. Use Printers & scanners in Settings, or Devices and Printers in Control Panel on older versions, to add the printer. Windows normally creates the local print queue automatically as part of this process.
  1. Print a test page. Open the printer’s properties and send a test page to confirm that documents leave the queue and print correctly. If jobs remain stuck, check the connection, clear failed jobs, and restart the Print Spooler service if necessary.

A separate Local Print Queue download is not always needed. If Windows reports a missing driver, first try Windows Update or reinstall the correct printer driver from the manufacturer rather than selecting a package based only on the queue label.
