The EDIROL UM 1 USB Driver enables Windows to communicate with Edirol’s UM-1 USB MIDI interface, allowing compatible music software to exchange MIDI data with connected instruments. It supports the connection between your computer and MIDI keyboards, sound modules, or other MIDI equipment; it does not carry recorded audio.
Key Features
- USB-to-MIDI communication: Provides the driver connection needed to send and receive MIDI messages through the UM-1 interface.
- MIDI software integration: Makes the interface available to compatible sequencers, digital audio workstations, and other applications with MIDI input and output settings.
- External instrument control: Enables software to exchange note, controller, and other supported MIDI messages with connected hardware.
- Windows device recognition: Helps Windows identify the interface and expose its MIDI ports to compatible applications when the correct driver is installed.
How to Install
- Check the driver’s compatibility. Before downloading, confirm that the package explicitly supports your Windows version and system architecture. For Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, do not assume that an older UM-1 driver will work simply because the device connects by USB. Also verify that the package matches the UM-1 rather than a similarly named model.
- Download and extract the package. Save the driver to a local folder. If it comes in a compressed archive, extract all files before running the installer. Read any included instructions for model-specific requirements.
- Start the installation. Close music applications and run the supplied setup program, allowing administrator access if requested. Keep the interface disconnected until the installer or included documentation tells you to connect it.
- Connect the UM-1 and finish setup. Attach it directly to an available USB port, then follow the remaining prompts. Restart Windows if requested. If Windows reports a compatibility or signature problem, verify the package rather than disabling security protections.
- Configure and test MIDI. Open your music application and select the UM-1 ports in its MIDI settings. Connect the interface’s MIDI OUT to your instrument’s MIDI IN, and its MIDI IN to the instrument’s MIDI OUT. Test note input or playback to confirm communication.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or rolls back on Windows 10/11: Run the legacy Edirol installer as Administrator and in Windows 7 compatibility mode. Reboot, disconnect the UM-1, run the correct UM-1 driver setup, then reconnect only when prompted. If Windows blocks the older/unsigned driver, use an official signed package or temporarily disable driver-signature enforcement during install.
- Device not detected: Try a rear USB 2.0 port directly, not a hub, and swap the USB cable. In Device Manager remove any “Unknown Device” or old EDIROL UM-1 entry, rescan, and reinstall.
- Version conflict or no MIDI in DAW: Uninstall previous Edirol/Roland UM-1 drivers first and reboot. In your DAW select “EDIROL UM-1” as MIDI input/output; close other MIDI apps that may hold the port.
