The Blackmagic DVI Extender from Blackmagic Design converts a computer’s DVI output into SDI for use with compatible professional video equipment. Its driver and supporting software enable communication with the device for setup and maintenance; they do not replace your computer’s graphics driver or add a separate GPU.

Key Features

  • Device communication: Allows compatible Blackmagic software to communicate with the extender through its USB connection for supported configuration and maintenance tasks.
  • Setup support: Provides access to the controls available for the device in the matching Blackmagic software package.
  • Firmware maintenance: Compatible releases may include device firmware updates to address operational issues or improve compatibility.
  • Windows compatibility: When downloading for Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, choose a release that explicitly supports both your operating system and the Blackmagic DVI Extender. Older hardware may require a legacy package rather than the newest release.

How to Install

  1. Confirm your Windows version. Open your system information and check the operating system and system type. Review the download’s compatibility notes to ensure the package includes support for this extender.
  2. Prepare the computer. Close video applications and any Blackmagic utilities already running. If the package includes installation instructions, read them before connecting or disconnecting the hardware.
  3. Run the installer. Extract the downloaded archive if necessary, launch the setup program, and approve the Windows administrator prompt. Follow the installer’s instructions.
  4. Connect and check the device. Restart Windows if requested, then connect the extender by USB as directed. Open the included compatible utility and confirm that it detects the hardware. If a firmware update is offered, keep power and USB connected until it finishes.
  5. Test the video path. Connect the DVI source and SDI destination, then select an output format supported by both devices. If no picture appears, check the source resolution, cabling, and receiving equipment before reinstalling the driver.

A successful installation does not guarantee that every desktop resolution will work over SDI. Matching the source output to the extender’s supported formats is essential for reliable operation.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Installer fails or stops partway: Disconnect the DVI Extender, run the Blackmagic Desktop Video installer as administrator, temporarily disable antivirus, and reboot before retrying. Use the release matching your Windows version.
  • Device not detected/no signal: Check the Extender’s power and confirm signal direction (SDI→DVI or DVI→SDI). Reseat BNC/DVI cables, try another DVI source/display, and verify the unit appears in Blackmagic Desktop Video Setup.
  • Version conflicts or blank DVI output: Uninstall older Desktop Video versions, reboot, then install one matching release. Avoid mixing beta and stable builds. If DVI output is blank, set the source to a supported resolution/refresh rate and check EDID handling on the display.
