The Microsoft 1394 Net Adapter is a legacy networking component that allowed compatible Windows systems to communicate over an IEEE 1394 (FireWire) connection. Its driver supported IP networking through FireWire hardware; despite its placement in a printer category, it is not a printer driver and does not enable printing by itself.

Before downloading, check compatibility carefully. Microsoft’s built-in IP networking over IEEE 1394 was discontinued after Windows XP, so the original Microsoft 1394 Net Adapter driver is not supported on Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7. A FireWire controller driver on these systems serves a different purpose and does not restore the older networking feature.

Key Features

  • Legacy FireWire networking: Provides the software interface used for IP communication over compatible IEEE 1394 connections on supported older Windows installations.
  • Windows networking integration: Allows the adapter to appear as a network connection where Microsoft’s original 1394 networking stack is available.
  • Hardware-specific operation: Depends on a compatible FireWire controller and the appropriate operating-system components; a driver alone cannot add FireWire capability.
  • Distinct from peripheral drivers: Does not replace drivers for printers, cameras, storage devices, or other equipment connected through a FireWire port.

How to Install

  1. Identify your Windows version. Confirm which operating system is installed before selecting a package. If you use Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, do not attempt to force-install the legacy Microsoft 1394 Net Adapter driver.
  1. Check the hardware in Device Manager. Look under Network adapters and IEEE 1394 host controllers. Review the device’s Properties and hardware IDs to distinguish a networking component from a FireWire host controller.
  1. Choose the correct driver source. For supported FireWire hardware on newer Windows versions, check Windows Update or the controller manufacturer’s support resources. Verify explicit compatibility with your Windows version and system architecture.
  1. Install only a matching package. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions or use Device Manager’s Update driver option when an appropriate driver is available. Avoid packages that claim to restore legacy 1394 networking without documented support.
  1. Restart if requested and verify operation. Check Device Manager for errors and test the intended peripheral. If your goal is to transfer files between computers, use a supported Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection instead of the legacy 1394 network adapter.
