The MSI Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller driver enables Windows to communicate with the Renesas USB controller used in compatible MSI hardware. It helps connected USB devices operate correctly through the controller’s ports, including external drives, flash drives, and other peripherals. For Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, choose a package that matches your system version and controller hardware rather than assuming every release supports all four operating systems.
Key Features
- USB 3.0 connectivity: Provides driver support for SuperSpeed USB connections on compatible ports, with actual transfer speeds depending on the connected device, cable, and storage hardware.
- Peripheral communication: Allows Windows to manage devices connected through the Renesas host controller, supporting everyday tasks such as accessing external storage and transferring files.
- Backward-compatible connections: Supports the controller’s ability to work with older USB peripherals, which operate at their own supported speeds.
- Controller recognition: Helps Windows identify and initialize the supported controller correctly, which may resolve a missing-driver warning in Device Manager.
How to Install
- Check your hardware and Windows version. Open Device Manager and look under “Universal Serial Bus controllers” or “Other devices” for the Renesas controller. If its identity is unclear, check its hardware IDs under Properties > Details. Confirm your Windows version and whether it uses a 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Download the matching driver package. Verify that the package supports your MSI model, Renesas controller, and operating system. Windows 11 and some Windows 10 configurations may already use a suitable built-in driver; an older package is not automatically a better choice.
- Prepare for installation. Save your work and disconnect nonessential USB devices, particularly external drives that are actively transferring data. Extract the downloaded archive if necessary.
- Install the driver. Run the included installer and follow its instructions. If the package contains driver files without an installer, right-click the controller in Device Manager, select “Update driver,” then choose “Browse my computer for drivers” and point to the extracted folder.
- Restart and test. Restart Windows if prompted, then reconnect your USB devices. Check that the controller appears without a warning icon in Device Manager and test a compatible USB 3.0 device in the appropriate port.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or rolls back: Uninstall any existing Renesas/NEC USB 3.0 host controller entries in Device Manager, reboot, then run the MSI driver package as administrator. Disconnect USB 3.0 devices during installation.
- Controller not detected or yellow bang: Enable xHCI/USB 3.0 in BIOS, try a rear motherboard port, and check the front-panel USB 3.0 header. In Device Manager, scan for hardware changes; if Code 10/43 appears, remove the device and reinstall the matching driver.
- Version conflicts with Windows drivers: Windows may load its built-in xHCI driver or an older Renesas package. Roll back/uninstall the conflicting driver, reboot, and install only the MSI Renesas package for this controller; avoid mixing NEC/Renesas driver versions.
