The Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter is a software-based network adapter that allows a compatible wireless card to support a virtual Wi-Fi connection. Its driver works with Windows networking and your physical Wi-Fi adapter’s driver to enable features such as a hosted wireless network where supported. Availability varies across Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, so this adapter may not appear—or be required—on every PC.
Key Features
- Virtual wireless networking: Provides a logical Wi-Fi interface alongside your physical wireless adapter on compatible systems.
- Hosted network support: Can help a supported PC create a wireless access point when used with Windows network-sharing features.
- Windows integration: Works with built-in networking components and appears in Device Manager when the relevant functionality is available.
- Hardware-dependent compatibility: Relies on your wireless chipset and its driver. Newer Windows versions may use different virtual adapters for Mobile hotspot rather than the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter.
How to Install
- Check your Windows version and wireless hardware. Confirm whether you use Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, and identify your physical Wi-Fi adapter under Device Manager > Network adapters. Match any downloaded driver to that hardware and your Windows architecture.
- Get the appropriate wireless driver. The Microsoft virtual adapter is generally supplied through Windows networking components rather than a separate universal installer. Use Windows Update or obtain the compatible Wi-Fi driver from your PC or wireless adapter manufacturer.
- Install the wireless driver. Run the manufacturer’s installer and follow its instructions. If you received extracted driver files, right-click the physical Wi-Fi adapter in Device Manager, choose Update driver, and browse to the extracted folder.
- Restart and check Device Manager. After restarting, expand Network adapters. Select View > Show hidden devices if necessary. The virtual adapter may appear only when supported networking features are enabled; its absence does not automatically indicate a driver problem.
- Test the feature you need. On Windows 10 or 11, check Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile hotspot. For older hosted-network configurations on Windows 7 or 8, verify that the wireless driver supports that capability before configuring sharing.
If virtual Wi-Fi remains unavailable, check the wireless manufacturer’s documentation. Installing an unrelated miniport driver will not add hosted-network support to incompatible hardware.
