The Microsoft USB GPS Port (COM6) driver allows Windows to communicate with a connected USB GPS device through a serial COM port. It helps compatible navigation, mapping, and data-logging software access the GPS receiver’s output. Before downloading, check that the driver matches your device’s hardware ID and your version of Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7.
Key Features
- USB-to-serial communication: Provides the connection that compatible software needs to receive data from a USB GPS receiver.
- COM port access: Makes the GPS connection available as a serial port, shown here as COM6, for applications that require manual port selection.
- Windows device recognition: Helps Windows identify and configure the connected hardware when the correct driver is installed.
- Support for GPS applications: Enables compatible programs to read the receiver’s data; available location information depends on the hardware, signal reception, and application settings.
How to Install
- Confirm the device details. Connect the GPS receiver and open Device Manager. Look under Ports (COM & LPT), Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Other devices. Open the device’s Properties and select Details > Hardware Ids to verify that the download matches your hardware.
- Choose the correct package. Select a driver intended for your Windows version and system architecture. Do not assume a package for Windows 7 or 8 will also work on Windows 10 or 11 unless its compatibility information confirms this.
- Install the driver. Extract the download if necessary. Run the included installer, or right-click the device in Device Manager, choose Update driver, and select Browse my computer for drivers. Point Windows to the extracted driver folder and follow the prompts.
- Check the connection. Restart Windows if requested, then reconnect the receiver. Verify that the Microsoft USB GPS Port (COM6) entry appears without a warning icon. Windows may assign a different COM number after installation or when the device is moved to another USB port.
- Configure your GPS software. Select the COM port displayed in Device Manager and use the communication settings recommended by the receiver’s manufacturer. If the port opens but no position is reported, check the receiver’s signal conditions and allow it to acquire a GPS fix.
A driver establishes communication with the receiver; it does not improve satellite reception or add GPS capability to a computer without compatible hardware.
