The Microsoft USB CCID Smartcard Reader (WUDF) driver allows Windows to communicate with compatible USB smart card readers. It supports the connection between the reader and Windows smart card services, enabling applications to use supported cards for tasks such as certificate-based sign-in and digital authentication. Despite sometimes appearing under a Printer category, this device is a smart card reader, not a printer.

Key Features

  • USB CCID communication: Supports compatible readers that follow the Chip Card Interface Device standard, allowing Windows to exchange commands and data with an inserted smart card.
  • Windows smart card integration: Works with Windows smart card services so compatible security applications can access the reader. Some cards also require separate middleware or a card-specific minidriver.
  • User-mode driver framework: Uses the Windows User-Mode Driver Framework (WUDF), which runs supported driver components outside the Windows kernel to help isolate driver failures.
  • Support across Windows versions: Compatible hardware can use the Microsoft driver on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, subject to the reader’s requirements and the availability of a suitable driver for the installed system.

How to Install

  1. Confirm your hardware and Windows version. Open Device Manager and look for the reader under Smart card readers or Other devices. Check its hardware IDs if necessary, and verify whether your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit before choosing a driver package.
  1. Try automatic installation first. Connect the reader directly to a USB port and allow Windows to detect it. Check Windows Update for an appropriate driver; on supported systems, driver updates may appear under optional updates.
  1. Install a downloaded package if needed. Use a trusted, digitally signed driver that explicitly supports your reader and Windows version. Extract the package if it is compressed, then follow its included installation instructions.
  1. Update through Device Manager. Right-click the reader, select Update driver, and choose Browse my computer for drivers. Point Windows to the extracted driver folder and follow the prompts. Do not force installation if Windows reports that the package is incompatible.
  1. Verify operation. Restart if prompted, then confirm that the reader appears without a warning symbol in Device Manager. Insert a supported smart card and test it with your intended application. If the reader is detected but the card is not usable, check whether the card issuer requires additional software.
