The Microsoft Hyper V Virtual Keyboard is a virtual input device that lets a Windows guest operating system receive keyboard input inside a Hyper-V virtual machine. Its Microsoft driver helps translate keystrokes from the virtual machine connection into input the guest can recognize, supporting everyday typing, shortcuts, and navigation.
Key Features
- Virtual keyboard support: Enables keyboard input through the Hyper-V virtual keyboard interface within the guest operating system.
- Windows input integration: Works with the guest’s input system so applications can receive keystrokes without requiring a separate physical keyboard connection to the virtual machine.
- Microsoft-provided driver support: Uses components supplied through Windows or supported Hyper-V integration updates, depending on the guest version.
- Support across Windows versions: Intended for applicable Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 guest configurations. Driver availability and installation requirements vary by Windows version and Hyper-V environment.
How to Install
- Check the guest operating system. Inside the virtual machine, confirm the Windows version and system architecture. Choose only a Microsoft Hyper V Virtual Keyboard driver package that explicitly matches your guest; a package for Windows 11 or 10 may not suit Windows 8 or 7.
- Try Windows Update first. Install available updates within the guest and restart if prompted. This virtual keyboard driver is normally provided as part of Windows or Hyper-V integration components, so a separate download may not be necessary.
- Locate the device in Device Manager. Open Device Manager inside the virtual machine and look under Keyboards or, if the driver is missing, Other devices. Check the device properties to confirm you are updating the virtual keyboard rather than another input device.
- Install a compatible driver if needed. If you have a trusted, digitally signed Microsoft driver package, extract it, right-click the device, and select Update driver. Choose Browse my computer for drivers, point to the extracted folder, and follow the prompts. Do not force installation if Windows reports that the package is incompatible.
- Restart and test keyboard input. Reconnect to the virtual machine and check typing and navigation. If input still fails, review the Hyper-V connection settings and the guest’s integration-component status; not every keyboard issue is caused by the driver.
