The M AUDIO Keystation 61es is a 61-key USB MIDI controller for playing software instruments and recording MIDI performances. Its driver support allows Windows to recognize the keyboard and pass note, velocity, and controller data to compatible music applications. The Keystation 61es is class-compliant for basic USB MIDI use, so a separate M-Audio driver may not be necessary.
Key Features
- USB MIDI communication: Connects the keyboard to your computer so compatible recording software can receive your playing.
- Expressive performance input: Carries velocity information, pitch-bend movements, modulation changes, and other supported MIDI messages to your software instruments.
- DAW integration: Makes the controller available as a MIDI input in compatible digital audio workstations once it is recognized and enabled.
- Windows connectivity: Basic operation can use Windows’ built-in USB MIDI support. Before installing an additional package on Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, check that it explicitly supports your system and the Keystation 61es.
How to Install
- Check whether a download is needed. Connect the Keystation 61es directly to an available USB port and switch it on. Allow Windows to finish detecting the controller before opening your music software.
- Verify device recognition. Open Device Manager and look for the keyboard or a USB MIDI device entry. If it appears without a warning icon, test it in your recording application first; the built-in driver may already provide everything required.
- Confirm package compatibility. If an additional driver is needed, choose an M-Audio package that specifically lists the Keystation 61es and your Windows version. Check any architecture requirements, and do not assume an older installer supports Windows 11 or Windows 10.
- Follow the installer instructions. Close audio applications, extract the downloaded files if necessary, and run the setup program. Disconnect or reconnect the keyboard only when instructed, and restart Windows if requested.
- Enable and test MIDI input. Open your DAW’s MIDI settings, select the Keystation 61es as an input, and load a software instrument. Play a few keys and test the pitch and modulation wheels. If no notes register, check the selected input and try another USB port or cable.
The Keystation 61es sends MIDI data rather than audio. Sound comes from your software instrument through your computer’s audio output or audio interface, whose driver settings determine much of the playback latency.
