The M Audio ProjectMix I O combines a FireWire audio interface with a hands-on control surface for recording and mixing. Its M-Audio driver enables Windows to communicate with the hardware, making audio inputs and outputs available to compatible recording software.
Key Features
- Audio input and output access: Allows supported applications to use the ProjectMix I O for recording microphones and instruments and playing back mixes through connected monitors.
- ASIO support: Provides a dedicated audio driver option for compatible DAWs, with buffer settings that help balance monitoring latency against system stability.
- Audio configuration: Offers access to supported sample-rate, synchronization, and buffer options so you can match the interface setup to your recording session.
- DAW integration support: Works alongside the appropriate control-surface configuration to help compatible software communicate with the unit’s faders, transport buttons, and other controls.
How to Install
- Check compatibility before downloading. Match the driver package to your Windows version and system architecture. For Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, verify the package’s release notes rather than assuming one installer supports every version. ProjectMix I O is legacy hardware, so newer Windows compatibility may be limited.
- Prepare the FireWire connection. Confirm that your computer has a compatible IEEE 1394 controller and a suitable cable. A passive USB-to-FireWire adapter will not replace a FireWire controller. Keep the interface disconnected during installation unless the installer instructs otherwise.
- Run the driver installer. Close your audio applications, extract the download if necessary, and launch the setup program with administrator permissions. Follow the prompts and restart Windows if requested.
- Connect the interface safely. Follow M-Audio’s power and connection guidance, then allow Windows to detect the ProjectMix I O. Check Device Manager for any warning symbols.
- Configure your recording software. Select the M-Audio ASIO driver where available, choose the required audio channels, and adjust the buffer size. Set up the DAW’s supported control-surface mode separately, then test playback, recording, and transport controls.
