The FTDI FT232R USB UART driver allows Windows to communicate with equipment that uses FTDI’s USB-to-serial interface. If your printer or another connected device relies on an FT232R chip, the driver can provide the virtual COM port its software needs to exchange data over USB.

Key Features

  • Virtual COM port support: Makes compatible USB-connected hardware available as a serial port for applications that communicate through COM ports.
  • FTDI interface recognition: Helps Windows identify the FT232R USB UART interface rather than leaving it listed as an unknown or unconfigured device.
  • Serial communication settings: Supports configurable options such as baud rate, parity, and flow control, allowing software to match the connected equipment’s requirements.
  • Windows driver options: FTDI driver packages are available for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. Choose a release that explicitly supports your Windows version and system architecture.

How to Install

  1. Check your Windows version and hardware. Confirm your operating system and whether it uses a 32-bit, 64-bit, or ARM-based architecture. Make sure the connected equipment actually uses the FTDI FT232R USB UART interface.
  2. Download a compatible driver package. Select an FTDI driver release intended for your Windows version and architecture. Extract the files first if the download is a compressed archive.
  3. Install the driver. Run the included installer, if provided, and follow its prompts. For a manual installation, open Device Manager, locate the FT232R interface or unidentified USB device, select Update driver, and browse to the extracted driver folder.
  4. Connect and verify the device. Plug the equipment into a working USB port using a data-capable cable. In Device Manager, check Ports (COM & LPT) for a USB Serial Port entry and note its COM number.
  5. Configure your application. Select that COM port in the printer utility or other communication software, then use the serial settings specified by the equipment manufacturer. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.

The FT232R driver handles the USB-to-serial connection; it is not a universal printer driver. Depending on your printer, you may also need the manufacturer’s printing software or a separate printer driver to send print jobs correctly.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or rolls back: Run the FTDI VCP driver installer as administrator, disconnect other FT232R devices, and reboot before retrying. Check Device Manager for a yellow warning icon; if present, uninstall the device and driver package, then reinstall.
  • Device not detected/no COM port: Try another USB cable and port (avoid hubs), confirm the FT232R appears in Device Manager under Ports or USB, and install the FTDI VCP driver if it shows as unknown. For externally powered boards, verify wiring and power.
  • Version conflicts/COM port changes: Remove older FTDI drivers via Device Manager > Uninstall device (delete driver), install the current FTDI CDM/VCP package, then assign a stable COM port under Port Settings > Advanced. Disable unused serial devices if ports conflict.
