The FTDI FT232R USB UART driver allows Windows to communicate with equipment that uses FTDI’s USB-to-serial interface. It typically creates a virtual COM port, enabling compatible software to exchange serial data with connected hardware, including some printers and other serial-controlled devices.
Key Features
- Virtual COM port support: Makes the USB-connected interface available as a COM port for applications that communicate through a serial connection.
- Configurable serial communication: Allows compatible software to use settings such as baud rate, data bits, parity, and flow control to match the connected equipment.
- Windows driver options: FTDI provides driver packages for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. Choose a release that explicitly supports your Windows version and system architecture.
- Support for FT232R-based equipment: Handles communication with the FTDI interface used inside a device or USB-to-serial adapter. For printers, separate printer software or a model-specific driver may still be required.
How to Install
- Check your Windows version and system type. Open your system information to confirm which Windows edition and architecture you are running. Select an FTDI driver package that matches both; a current package may not support older Windows versions.
- Download and prepare the driver. Use a trusted FTDI package or the driver recommended by your equipment manufacturer. If the download is compressed, extract it to a folder you can easily locate.
- Run the installer or use Device Manager. If the package includes a setup program, run it and follow the prompts. For manual installation, connect the device, open Device Manager, right-click the unrecognized FT232R interface, and select Update driver. Browse to the extracted driver folder.
- Verify the COM port. After installation, look under Ports (COM & LPT) in Device Manager for a USB Serial Port entry. Note its COM number. If a warning icon remains, check the device status and confirm that you selected a compatible driver.
- Configure and test your application. Select the assigned COM port in your printer utility or other serial application, then match the communication settings to the equipment’s documentation. If communication fails, check the USB connection and close any other program that may be using the same port.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or no COM port appears: Install FTDI’s signed VCP driver as administrator and reboot. The FT232R only creates a COM port with VCP; a D2XX-only install will not.
- Device not detected: Use a data-capable USB cable and another port. In Device Manager, confirm `VID_0403&PID_6001`; remove hidden/ghost FTDI entries, replug, and rescan.
- Driver version conflicts: Windows Update may replace FTDI’s VCP driver with an older version. Uninstall existing FTDI VCP/D2XX entries and delete driver software, reboot, then reinstall the latest FTDI package.
