The FTDI FT232R USB UART driver allows Windows to communicate with equipment that uses FTDI’s USB-to-serial interface chip. It typically creates a virtual COM port, enabling compatible software to exchange serial data with connected hardware, including some printer interfaces, controllers, and programming adapters. For Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, choose an FTDI driver package that explicitly supports your operating system and system architecture.

Key Features

  • Virtual COM port support: Makes the USB-connected serial interface available as a COM port that compatible applications can select.
  • Configurable serial communication: Supports settings such as baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, and flow control, allowing software to match the connected equipment’s requirements.
  • Device identification in Windows: Helps Windows recognize the FT232R interface and display its serial-port assignment in Device Manager.
  • Support for serial-connected equipment: Provides the communication layer used by compatible tools and devices. If the interface is part of a printer setup, separate printer software or a model-specific print driver may also be required.

How to Install

  1. Check your Windows version and architecture. Open your system information and confirm whether you are running Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7. Select a driver release that lists support for that version and architecture; newer releases may not support older Windows versions.
  1. Download and prepare the driver. Obtain the appropriate FTDI FT232R USB UART driver package from a trusted source. If it arrives as a compressed archive, extract its contents to an accessible folder.
  1. Install the package. Run the included installer, if available, and follow its prompts. For a manual installation, connect the device, open Device Manager, right-click the unrecognized FT232R interface, and choose Update driver. Browse to the extracted folder and include subfolders.
  1. Confirm the COM port appears. After installation, look under Ports (COM & LPT) in Device Manager for a USB Serial Port entry. A typical FTDI virtual COM port installation also adds a USB Serial Converter entry under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  1. Configure and test your software. Select the assigned COM port in your application and match the serial settings specified by the equipment manufacturer. If communication fails, check the cable, port selection, and settings before reinstalling the driver.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or yellow warning in Device Manager: Uninstall existing FTDI “USB Serial Converter”/COM port entries, choose “Delete the driver software,” reboot, then run FTDI’s latest CDM/VCP installer as administrator. This clears stale FT232R driver packages causing Code 10 or failed installs.
  • Device not detected: Use a data-capable USB cable and try a direct rear port. In Device Manager, check for `VID_0403&PID_6001`; if absent, test another PC. On FT232R boards, verify 3.3 V/5 V power and that the chip is not held in reset.
  • Version conflicts/COM port missing: Windows Update may install an older FTDI driver. Remove all FTDI driver versions, reinstall the current combined VCP/D2XX CDM package, then rescan. If the port still does not appear, check the FT232R EEPROM’s VCP setting with FT_Prog.
