The FT232R USB UART driver from FTDI enables Windows to communicate with equipment that uses the FT232R USB-to-serial chip. For printers and other serial-connected devices built around this chip, the driver typically creates a virtual COM port that compatible software can use to exchange data. Choose an FTDI driver package that explicitly supports your version of Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7 and your system architecture.

Key Features

  • Virtual COM port support: Lets applications communicate with FT232R-based hardware through a standard Windows COM port.
  • USB-to-serial communication: Provides the connection between your computer’s USB interface and the device’s UART interface.
  • Configurable serial settings: Supports communication parameters such as baud rate, parity, and flow control, which must match the connected equipment’s requirements.
  • Device Manager integration: Makes it easier to check driver status, identify the assigned COM port, and troubleshoot connection problems.

How to Install

  1. Check your Windows version and architecture. Open your system information to confirm which Windows release you use and whether it requires a 32-bit, 64-bit, or another supported driver package. Older Windows versions may need a different FTDI release than Windows 11 or 10.
  2. Download and extract the compatible driver. Select a package that lists support for the FT232R USB UART and your operating system. If it comes as a ZIP archive, extract it before proceeding.
  3. Install the driver. Run the supplied installer, if available, and follow its prompts. For a manual installation, connect the device, open Device Manager, right-click the unrecognized FT232R entry, select Update driver, and browse to the extracted folder.
  4. Verify device recognition. After installation, check Device Manager for the USB serial device and its COM port, usually listed under Ports (COM & LPT). If a second related entry still needs a driver, update it from the same extracted package.
  5. Configure your application. Select the assigned COM port in your printer utility or other compatible software, then set the serial parameters recommended by the equipment manufacturer. Restart the application or reconnect the device if it does not appear immediately.

Note: The FTDI driver handles the USB-to-serial connection; it does not replace a printer-specific driver. Your printer may also require its manufacturer’s software to print correctly.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or device shows Code 10/28: Uninstall the FT232R in Device Manager, choose “Delete the driver software,” disconnect it, then install the latest FTDI VCP driver as administrator. Reconnect only after installation finishes; Windows Update may otherwise load an older FTDI driver first.
  • Device not detected: Try a different USB port/cable and confirm the FT232R appears in Device Manager with FTDI VID/PID (0403:6001). If it shows as unknown, reinstall the VCP driver; if the EEPROM was reprogrammed, restore default FT232R settings with FT_PROG.
  • Version conflicts/COM port won’t open: Remove old FTDI VCP driver versions and hidden COM ports, reboot, then let the current driver assign a fresh COM number. Close any application holding the port and set the correct COM port in your terminal software.
