The Broadcom Usbccid Smartcard Reader (WUDF) driver enables Windows to communicate with the reader so compatible applications can access inserted smart cards. It supports the connection between the USB hardware and Windows smart card services for tasks such as certificate-based sign-in and authentication, provided the required card software is also installed.
Key Features
- USB smart card communication: Allows Windows to recognize and interact with the Broadcom reader through the USB Chip/Smart Card Interface Device (CCID) framework.
- User-mode driver support: Uses the Windows User-Mode Driver Framework (WUDF) to integrate the reader with the operating system’s driver infrastructure.
- Smart card application access: Makes the reader available to compatible authentication and certificate-management tools. Some cards require separate middleware or security software from their issuer.
- Windows driver options: Driver packages may be available for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. Choose a release that explicitly supports your Windows version, system architecture, and hardware ID rather than assuming one package covers every system.
How to Install
- Confirm the device and Windows version. Open Device Manager and locate the reader, usually under Smart card readers or Other devices if its driver is missing. Check its hardware IDs in Properties > Details, and confirm whether your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Select the matching driver package. Download a Broadcom Usbccid Smartcard Reader (WUDF) driver intended for your hardware and operating system. If the reader is built into a laptop, check that the package also matches the computer manufacturer’s requirements.
- Extract and install the driver. Unpack the download if necessary. Run the included installer, or right-click the reader in Device Manager, select Update driver, and choose Browse my computer for drivers to point Windows to the extracted folder.
- Complete setup and reconnect if needed. Follow the installation prompts and restart Windows if requested. For an external reader, reconnect it directly to a USB port if it does not appear after installation.
- Verify smart card operation. Confirm that Device Manager shows the reader without a warning icon, then test it with a compatible card and application. If the reader is detected but the card cannot be used, check for required card middleware and confirm that the Windows Smart Card service is available.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or rolls back: Run the Broadcom package as administrator, confirm Windows UMDF/WUDF components are current, then reconnect the reader. In Device Manager, check for Code 28 or 52; Code 52 usually means the driver package is unsigned or mismatched, so use the correct signed Broadcom release.
- Device not detected / smart card not recognized: Set the Smart Card service (`SCardSvr`) to Automatic and start it. Check Device Manager under Smart card readers, try another USB port, and disconnect other CCID readers to rule out conflicts.
- Version conflict with Windows’ inbox Usbccid driver: In Device Manager, right-click the reader > Update driver > Browse > Let me pick > select the Broadcom package. If errors persist, uninstall with Delete driver software, rescan, then reinstall.
