The Microsoft bth.inf file is a Windows setup information file used to install components of the built-in Bluetooth driver stack. Although listed under Audio, it supports Bluetooth connectivity more broadly, helping compatible hardware communicate with Windows so devices such as wireless headphones and speakers can be paired and used.

Key Features

  • Windows Bluetooth support: Defines installation settings for Microsoft Bluetooth components, working alongside compatible Bluetooth adapter drivers.
  • Wireless audio connectivity: Helps provide the Bluetooth connection used by supported headsets and speakers. Audio playback and microphone functionality also depend on the available Bluetooth profiles and device drivers.
  • Device discovery and pairing: Supports the Windows Bluetooth framework used to find, connect, and manage compatible wireless accessories.
  • Integration with Windows: Microsoft Bluetooth components are included in Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, though supported hardware, features, and driver requirements vary by OS version.

How to Install

  1. Check your adapter and Windows version. Open Device Manager and look under Bluetooth for your adapter. Confirm your Windows edition and system architecture before selecting any driver package; bth.inf is not a universal replacement for the adapter manufacturer’s driver.
  1. Try Windows Update first. Install available driver updates, including relevant optional updates where offered. Built-in Microsoft Bluetooth components are normally installed and maintained through Windows rather than as a standalone INF download.
  1. Prepare a compatible package if needed. If you have downloaded a trusted driver package, extract it to a local folder. Keep its contents together, since an INF file alone does not contain all the files required for installation.
  1. Update through Device Manager. Right-click the Bluetooth adapter, select Update driver, then choose the option to browse your computer for drivers. Select the extracted folder and follow the prompts. Do not force installation if Windows reports that the package is incompatible.
  1. Restart and test your audio device. Restart if prompted, enable Bluetooth, and pair your headphones or speaker through Windows settings. Select the paired accessory as the audio output device and test playback.

If Bluetooth is missing entirely, check that the adapter is enabled and install the appropriate driver from your PC or adapter manufacturer. Replacing bth.inf by itself generally will not resolve missing hardware support.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or rolls back: `bth.inf` is an inbox Microsoft Bluetooth driver; conflicts with an OEM Bluetooth suite can block it. Uninstall the existing Bluetooth stack in Device Manager (enable Show hidden devices), reboot, then let Windows reinstall or run the OEM package as administrator.
  • Bluetooth adapter not detected: confirm airplane mode/hardware switch is off, start the Bluetooth Support Service, and scan for hardware changes in Device Manager. Update chipset/USB drivers if the radio still does not appear.
  • Version conflicts or dropouts after updates: roll back the Bluetooth driver, remove third-party Bluetooth managers, and install the latest OEM radio driver instead of mixing it with the generic `bth.inf` package.
