The MTP USB Device driver allows Windows to communicate with compatible phones, cameras, and other portable devices using Media Transfer Protocol (MTP). It helps your computer recognize the connected device and access supported files, such as photos, videos, and music. On Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, MTP support is typically provided through Windows, although some devices may also require software from the manufacturer.

Key Features

  • Device recognition: Helps Windows identify compatible MTP devices connected through USB and display them in File Explorer.
  • Media file transfers: Enables copying supported photos, music, videos, and other files between your PC and the connected device.
  • Access to shared storage: Makes folders exposed by the device available for browsing without treating the device as a standard USB disk.
  • Windows integration: Works with Windows device-management tools to support driver installation, status checks, and troubleshooting.

How to Install

  1. Check compatibility before downloading. Confirm your Windows version and whether your system uses a 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. If the manufacturer supplies a separate driver package, choose one intended for your device and operating system.
  1. Connect and unlock the device. Use a USB cable that supports data transfer, not charging only. If prompted on the device, select “File Transfer” or “MTP” as the USB connection mode.
  1. Allow Windows to install the driver. Wait for automatic device setup to finish. If the device remains unrecognized, check Windows Update for available driver updates.
  1. Update manually if needed. Open Device Manager, locate the connected device under Portable Devices or Other devices, right-click it, and select “Update driver.” Search automatically, or browse to the extracted manufacturer-provided driver folder.
  1. Verify the connection. Open File Explorer and check whether the device’s accessible storage appears. Try transferring a small file. If it still does not appear, reconnect it, try another USB port or data cable, and confirm that file-transfer mode remains enabled.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or shows Code 10/28: Remove older manufacturer MTP packages in Device Manager (right-click the device > Uninstall device, check “Delete the driver software”), reconnect, and let Windows install its inbox MTP USB Device driver. Run Windows Update and avoid forced third-party packages.
  • Device not detected: Confirm the phone/camera is unlocked and set to MTP/File Transfer, not charging-only or PTP. Use a data-capable USB cable and a rear motherboard port; avoid unpowered hubs. Check Device Manager for Unknown/USB device entries.
  • Version conflicts after a driver update: Roll back via Device Manager > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, or uninstall the manufacturer driver and select Microsoft’s “MTP USB Device” from Update driver > Browse > Let me pick. Reboot before testing.
