The MStar USB Serial driver helps Windows recognize the device’s USB-to-serial connection and allows compatible software to communicate with it. For a printer setup that uses this interface, installing the appropriate driver can resolve an unrecognized device or a missing communication port. Choose a package from the manufacturer that matches your version of Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7 and your system architecture.
Key Features
- USB-to-serial communication: Provides the interface needed for compatible applications to exchange data with the connected device.
- Device recognition: Helps Windows identify MStar USB Serial correctly instead of listing it as an unknown device when the driver is missing.
- Port access for compatible software: May expose a serial COM port that printing, configuration, or maintenance software can use, depending on the hardware.
- Support for printer-related connections: Enables communication through the serial interface; a separate printer driver may still be required for normal printing.
How to Install
- Check your Windows version and hardware. Confirm whether your computer runs Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, and check its system type in Windows Settings or Control Panel. Verify that the download supports your specific device; the MStar USB Serial name alone may not identify every hardware variant.
- Download and prepare the driver. Select the matching package from the manufacturer. If it is supplied as a compressed archive, extract it to a folder you can easily locate. Read any included instructions before connecting the hardware.
- Run the installer or use Device Manager. Follow the setup program if one is provided. For a driver-only package, connect the device, open Device Manager, locate the relevant entry, and select Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers. Point Windows to the extracted folder.
- Reconnect and check detection. Restart the computer if prompted, then reconnect the device. Check Device Manager for warning icons and, if a COM port is created, note its assigned number.
- Test the connection. Open the compatible printer utility or application and select the correct communication port where required. If the device remains undetected, check the USB cable, try another USB port, and confirm that the driver matches the hardware before reinstalling.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or driver won’t load: Run the installer as administrator, check Device Manager for error codes, and reboot after installation. If using an unsigned MStar package, temporarily disable driver signature enforcement.
- Device not detected / no COM port: Try a different USB cable and port, avoid unpowered hubs, and confirm the adapter appears under Ports (COM & LPT). Reinstall with the device connected and check USB power-saving settings.
- Version conflicts or wrong COM port: Uninstall existing MStar USB Serial entries, including hidden devices, remove old driver packages, then install the manufacturer’s latest version. Note the assigned COM number and update your serial application.
