The Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller driver helps Windows recognize the controller and make its buttons, triggers, thumbsticks, and vibration functions available to compatible games. Whether you use a wired controller or a wireless model with an Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver, the correct driver allows the hardware to communicate with your PC.

Key Features

  • Game input support: Enables compatible games to receive input from the directional pad, analog sticks, triggers, and buttons through Microsoft’s controller interface.
  • Vibration feedback: Supports rumble effects in games that provide them, with availability depending on the game’s settings.
  • Wired and receiver-based connections: Supports wired Xbox 360 controllers and wireless controllers connected through a compatible receiver, using the appropriate driver for each device. Wireless models do not connect directly through Bluetooth.
  • Windows integration: Lets Windows detect the controller and provides access to basic input testing through the built-in Game Controllers panel. Driver installation methods vary between Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7.

How to Install

  1. Check your controller and Windows version. Identify whether you have a wired controller or a wireless controller with a USB receiver. If downloading a driver package, confirm that it supports your Windows version and system architecture.
  1. Connect the hardware. Plug the wired controller or wireless receiver into an available USB port on your PC. A wireless Xbox 360 controller requires a receiver; a Play & Charge cable does not turn it into a wired PC controller.
  1. Allow Windows to find the driver. Wait for automatic device setup to finish, then check Windows Update if the controller is not recognized. Windows 11 and Windows 10 typically handle compatible Xbox 360 hardware through built-in drivers or Windows Update.
  1. Install a compatible driver if needed. On Windows 8 or Windows 7, you may need an appropriate Microsoft driver package if automatic setup fails. Use only a trusted, signed package that explicitly supports your system, follow its installation prompts, and restart if requested.
  1. Pair and test the controller. For a wireless model, use the pairing buttons on the receiver and controller. Press Windows + R, enter `joy.cpl`, and open the controller’s properties to check button and stick responses before launching a compatible game.
