The Microsoft MTP driver enables Windows to communicate with phones, tablets, cameras, and other devices that use the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP). It lets you browse supported device storage and transfer photos, music, videos, and documents over USB without presenting the device as a traditional removable drive.
Key Features
- File transfer through File Explorer: Access files and folders that a connected MTP device makes available, then copy supported content between the device and your PC.
- Windows integration: Uses Microsoft’s portable-device support to help Windows identify and communicate with compatible USB devices.
- Support across Windows versions: MTP functionality is available in Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, although recognition and setup can vary by device and Windows configuration.
- Access to shared storage: Works with the connected device’s file-transfer settings, so you can manage accessible media while the device controls which storage locations are exposed.
How to Install
- Check compatibility before downloading. Confirm your Windows version and system architecture, then choose a compatible Microsoft MTP driver package if one is needed. Windows normally includes MTP support, so a separate download may not be necessary.
- Connect and unlock your device. Use a USB cable that supports data transfer. On a phone or tablet, open the USB connection notification and select File transfer or MTP rather than charging only. Approve any access prompt shown on the device.
- Allow Windows to detect the connection. Wait for automatic driver setup to finish. If the device remains unrecognized, check Windows Update for available updates, including optional driver updates where offered.
- Update the driver in Device Manager. Find the device under Portable Devices, Other devices, or the relevant USB category. Right-click it, select Update driver, and search automatically. If you have downloaded and extracted a trusted, compatible driver package, choose Browse my computer for drivers and select its folder.
- Reconnect and test file access. Restart the PC if prompted, then reconnect the device and open File Explorer. If storage does not appear, confirm file-transfer mode is still enabled and try another data-capable cable or USB port.
For Windows N editions, missing media components can affect MTP functionality. If normal setup does not resolve the issue, check whether the appropriate Microsoft Media Feature Pack is required for your Windows edition.
