The Microsoft HID Keyboard Device driver lets Windows recognize compatible keyboards that use the Human Interface Device (HID) standard and process their keystrokes. Supplied by Microsoft as part of Windows, it supports everyday typing and standard keyboard controls without requiring a separate driver from the keyboard manufacturer in many cases.

Key Features

  • Standard keyboard input: Enables Windows to receive letters, numbers, function keys, and common keyboard shortcuts from compatible HID keyboards.
  • Plug-and-play recognition: Helps Windows detect and configure supported keyboards when they are connected, including many USB models and keyboards using wireless USB receivers.
  • Windows compatibility: Available through the built-in driver support in Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. Compatibility with a particular keyboard still depends on its hardware and connection method.
  • Core functionality without extra software: Handles basic typing, while advanced features such as programmable macros, custom lighting, or specialized controls may require the keyboard manufacturer’s software.

How to Install

  1. Connect the keyboard. Plug it directly into an available USB port, or connect its wireless receiver. For a Bluetooth keyboard, complete pairing in Windows first. Windows will normally install the appropriate HID keyboard driver automatically.
  1. Open Device Manager. Search for Device Manager from the Start menu, then expand Keyboards. Your keyboard may appear as HID Keyboard Device rather than under its retail model name.
  1. Check for a driver update. Right-click the relevant keyboard entry, choose Update driver or Update Driver Software, and select the automatic search option. You can also check Windows Update for available driver updates.
  1. Use a downloaded package only if it matches. If you have a trusted, compatible driver package, extract it if necessary. In Device Manager, choose the option to browse your computer for drivers and select the extracted folder. Confirm that the package supports your Windows version and system architecture; do not force an incompatible driver to install.
  1. Test the keyboard. Restart if prompted, then check typing, shortcuts, and any function keys you use. If input remains unreliable, try another USB port or check the wireless connection before replacing the driver.

Because this is usually a built-in Windows driver, a separate download is often unnecessary. For missing advanced controls, check the keyboard manufacturer’s support resources rather than assuming the Microsoft HID driver provides model-specific features.
