The M Audio Axiom 49 is a USB MIDI keyboard controller used to play virtual instruments and control music-production software. Its driver helps Windows recognize the controller and handle MIDI communication between the keyboard and your applications; it does not turn the Axiom 49 into an audio interface.

Key Features

  • USB MIDI connectivity: Allows compatible music software to receive performance data from the keyboard over a USB connection.
  • Expressive performance input: Supports communication of MIDI messages such as notes, velocity, pitch bend, and modulation for responsive instrument control.
  • Hands-on software control: Carries MIDI data from assignable knobs, sliders, and pads so you can map them to supported functions in your DAW or virtual instruments.
  • Application integration: Makes the controller available as a MIDI device in compatible software. Control assignments and transport functions may require additional setup within the application.

How to Install

  1. Identify your Axiom 49 version. Check the model information on the controller before choosing a download. Different Axiom generations may have different driver requirements, so avoid selecting a package based only on the “49” keyboard size.
  2. Check Windows compatibility. Choose an M-Audio driver explicitly listed for your model and operating system. For Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, verify the package’s compatibility notes and any 32-bit or 64-bit requirements. Do not assume an older installer supports a newer Windows version.
  3. Prepare for installation. Close your DAW and other MIDI applications. Follow the package instructions about whether to disconnect the controller before running the installer. If your model uses Windows’ built-in USB MIDI support, a separate driver may not be necessary.
  4. Install and connect. Run the compatible installer, approve the Windows permission prompt, and follow the on-screen instructions. Restart if requested, then connect the Axiom 49 directly to a USB port using a suitable USB cable.
  5. Enable and test MIDI input. Open your music software’s MIDI settings and enable the Axiom 49 as an input device. Load a virtual instrument, select or arm its track, and play a few notes. If nothing responds, check the selected MIDI input, USB connection, and device status in Windows Device Manager.
