The Lawicel CANUSB (COM3) connects a Windows PC to a CAN bus through USB, allowing compatible software to communicate with CAN-based equipment. Its driver enables Windows to recognize the adapter and make it available as a virtual serial port for applications that support the device.

Key Features

  • Virtual COM port access: Provides the serial interface used by compatible CAN monitoring, diagnostic, and development tools to communicate with the adapter.
  • USB device recognition: Helps Windows identify the connected CANUSB hardware and associate it with the appropriate driver.
  • Windows support: Driver options cover Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; select a package that matches your Windows version and system architecture.
  • Application connectivity: Enables supported software to exchange commands and CAN data with the adapter. CAN bus settings, including bit rate and message filters, are configured through the application or device commands.

How to Install

  1. Check your Windows version. Confirm whether your PC runs Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, and whether it uses a 32-bit or 64-bit system. Choose the manufacturer’s driver package appropriate for your configuration.
  1. Download and prepare the driver. Save the package locally and extract it if it is compressed. Read any included instructions, especially guidance on whether to connect the adapter before or after installation.
  1. Install the package. Run the installer if one is supplied and follow its prompts. For a driver package without an installer, open Device Manager, locate the adapter or unrecognized USB device, select Update driver, and browse to the extracted driver folder.
  1. Connect and verify the adapter. Plug the Lawicel CANUSB into an available USB port. In Device Manager, check Ports (COM & LPT) for its virtual serial port and confirm that no warning icon appears. Although this device is listed as COM3, Windows may assign a different port number.
  1. Configure your CAN application. Select the COM port shown in Device Manager and use the communication settings recommended for the adapter. Set the CAN bit rate to match your network, and check bus wiring and termination before attempting communication.

If the adapter is not detected, try another USB port and verify that the installed driver matches your hardware and Windows version. The driver provides the connection interface; separate compatible software is needed to monitor or work with CAN traffic.
