The ELM327 USB Serial Port (COM3) driver allows Windows to recognize a compatible USB diagnostic adapter as a serial connection. It enables supported OBD-II software to communicate with the adapter, which can then exchange diagnostic information with a connected vehicle.
Key Features
- USB-to-serial communication: Provides the virtual COM port connection used by compatible diagnostic applications to access the ELM327 adapter.
- Windows compatibility: Suitable driver packages are available for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, depending on the adapter’s USB-to-serial chipset and the driver version.
- Diagnostic software access: Supports the communication link needed for tasks such as reading trouble codes and viewing live sensor data. Available functions depend on the vehicle, adapter, and application.
- Device identification: Helps Windows list the adapter under Ports (COM & LPT) in Device Manager, where you can check its assigned port and driver status.
How to Install
- Identify the adapter hardware. Check the manufacturer’s documentation or the device’s hardware IDs in Device Manager. ELM327 USB adapters can use different USB-to-serial chips, so the device name alone does not identify the correct driver.
- Choose a matching package. Download the driver supplied or recommended by the manufacturer for your chipset and Windows version. Confirm that it supports your system architecture, such as 32-bit or 64-bit, where applicable.
- Install the driver. Follow the package instructions and run the installer if one is included. For a package containing driver files only, extract them, open Device Manager, right-click the adapter, select Update driver, and browse to the extracted folder.
- Connect and verify the adapter. Plug it into a USB port and allow Windows to finish detection. Under Ports (COM & LPT), confirm that the device appears without a warning icon. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Configure your diagnostic application. Select the adapter’s assigned COM port in the software. Use COM3 only if Device Manager shows that assignment; Windows may choose another number. Connect the adapter to the vehicle and follow the application’s instructions for ignition state and connection settings.
If the adapter is not detected, try another USB port and verify the chipset match before reinstalling. A serial driver establishes the PC connection; it does not replace diagnostic software or guarantee support for every vehicle.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Driver install fails: Run the USB-serial driver installer as administrator, temporarily disable antivirus, and uninstall any previous ELM327/CH340/FTDI/CP210x driver before rebooting and reinstalling the matching vendor driver.
- Device not detected / COM3 missing: Try another USB port and cable, open Device Manager and scan for hardware changes, then check for COM3 conflicts. If the adapter shows with a warning icon, update or reinstall its USB-serial driver.
- Version or COM-port conflicts: Remove hidden/old COM ports in Device Manager, avoid mixing generic and vendor drivers, and confirm your scan software is set to the correct COM port and ELM327 baud rate (often 38400 or 9600).
