Question 1

Install fails or shows “Unknown device”?

Accepted Answer

This WD1600BEVT HDD normally uses Windows’ native ATA/STORAHCI or chipset SATA driver, not a standalone WD driver. Check Device Manager for SATA/ATA controller errors, then update the motherboard chipset/Intel RST or AMD SATA driver and reboot.

Question 2

Drive not detected?

Accepted Answer

Reseat the SATA data and power cables, try another port, and confirm the BIOS sees the WD1600BEVT. Set the SATA mode to AHCI unless legacy IDE is required, then initialize and assign a drive letter in Disk Management.

Question 3

Version conflicts after a controller update?

Accepted Answer

If the drive disappears or throws errors, roll back the SATA/ATA controller driver in Device Manager. Remove duplicate WD utilities, keep one storage driver, and run `chkdsk` plus a SMART check in WD Dashboard.
