Author: Western Digital

Question 1

Installer fails?

Accepted Answer

The WD5000H1CS is a bare SATA hard drive and does not need a Western Digital Windows driver. If a WD utility or third-party driver installer fails, cancel it; update the motherboard chipset/SATA AHCI driver instead and confirm the SATA cable is fully seated.

Question 2

Drive not detected?

Accepted Answer

Check both SATA data and power cables, try another SATA port, and confirm the drive appears in BIOS/UEFI. In Windows, open Disk Management and initialize/format the WD5000H1CS if it shows as unallocated. If using a USB enclosure, test a different bridge/adapter.

Question 3

Version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Keep the BIOS SATA mode consistent—AHCI or RAID—with the installed storage drivers. Remove conflicting old Intel RST/AMD RAID packages, use Device Manager rollback, and avoid forcing generic drivers over the chipset-provided SATA driver.
