Question 1

Drive not detected?

Accepted Answer

Check the 40-pin IDE cable, power connector, and master/slave/cable-select jumper. Use an 80-wire cable if available, and confirm BIOS detects the WD400BB before installing Windows.

Question 2

Install fails or OS cannot see the drive?

Accepted Answer

Set the SATA/IDE controller to legacy/IDE mode in BIOS. In Windows Setup, load the correct chipset IDE driver if needed; otherwise initialize and format the disk in Disk Management.

Question 3

Driver/version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

The WD400BB uses standard ATA/IDE drivers—no WD-specific driver is required. If Intel RST or a third-party controller driver causes conflicts, roll back to the Microsoft standard IDE/ATA driver.
