Question 1

Drive not detected?

Accepted Answer

Use the included power adapter and connect the WD10000H1U directly to a rear USB/eSATA/FireWire port, not a hub. Try another cable/port and check Disk Management. If the disk is unallocated, initialize/format only after backing up data.

Question 2

Install fails or unknown device?

Accepted Answer

Basic access uses Windows’ built-in mass-storage driver; no separate WD driver is required. Uninstall older WD utilities, reboot, and reconnect. In Device Manager, remove yellow-marked USB/eSATA entries and scan for hardware changes.

Question 3

Version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Don’t force generic third-party drivers. Uninstall old WD SmartWare/utility versions before installing current ones; let Windows Update provide the storage controller driver.
