Question 1

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Use a rear USB port and the original power adapter; avoid unpowered hubs. Check Disk Management for an unassigned drive letter, and try a known-good USB cable.

Question 2

Driver/utility install fails?

Accepted Answer

Windows normally uses the built-in USB mass storage driver, so don’t force a generic driver. Remove the device in Device Manager, reconnect it, and run any WD utility as administrator.

Question 3

Version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Uninstall old WD software or duplicate USB storage drivers, then rescan in Device Manager. If a recent update breaks access, roll back the USB controller driver or reinstall the WD utility.
