Question 1

Install fails on modern Windows?

Accepted Answer

The Astra 5600/5650 driver is legacy and often unsigned. Run the installer in Windows XP compatibility mode as administrator, or use a Windows XP virtual machine for scanning.

Question 2

Scanner not detected?

Accepted Answer

Connect the scanner directly to a rear USB port, not a hub, and confirm its power supply is connected. Remove any unknown UMAX device in Device Manager, reboot, then install the driver before reconnecting the scanner.

Question 3

Version/TWAIN conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Uninstall older UMAX Astra or TWAIN drivers and scanner utilities first. Reboot, install only the 5600/5650 package, then select the UMAX scanner as the TWAIN source in your scanning app.
