Question 1

Install fails or rolls back?

Accepted Answer

Run the installer as administrator and temporarily pause Windows Update so it doesn’t push an older Synaptics package mid-install. If setup still blocks, uninstall existing Synaptics/PS/2 touchpad entries in Device Manager, reboot, then reinstall the SMBus package.

Question 2

Touchpad not detected?

Accepted Answer

Check Device Manager for the Synaptics SMBus device under Human Interface Devices or Mice. If missing, enable the touchpad in BIOS/UEFI and install the chipset Serial IO/SMBus driver first, then reinstall Synaptics.

Question 3

Version conflicts or gestures stop after update?

Accepted Answer

Uninstall duplicate Synaptics drivers via Device Manager, choose “Delete driver software,” reboot, and reinstall the latest package matching your laptop model. Prevent Windows from auto-replacing it with an older driver.
