Name: SMSC Fast Infrared Driver
Author: SMSC

Question 1

Install fails or driver is unsigned?

Accepted Answer

SMSC Fast Infrared drivers are legacy. Run setup as administrator, match the INF to your Windows architecture, and use a signed OEM build where possible. On 64-bit Windows, only temporarily disable driver signature enforcement if you accept the risk.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Enable Infrared/IR in BIOS and check Device Manager for unknown Infrared devices or COM-port conflicts. Reseat the IR adapter and, if configurable, change its I/O address or COM assignment.

Question 3

Version conflicts with built-in IrDA?

Accepted Answer

Remove old SMSC/IrDA drivers and stale COM ports before installing. Avoid installing multiple infrared stacks; if Windows blocks the legacy stack, test in a compatible VM or use a vendor-approved replacement.
