Question 1

Install fails or rolls back?

Accepted Answer

The SMC2862W uses an older wireless driver. Run the installer as Administrator and try Windows XP/Vista compatibility mode. Use a direct USB 2.0 port, not a hub, and remove any previous SMC wireless utility before reinstalling.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Check Device Manager for an unknown USB device. Try another USB 2.0 port, reseat the adapter, and uninstall hidden/ghost USB entries. Confirm the hardware ID matches the SMC2862W before forcing a driver.

Question 3

Version conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Uninstall other wireless drivers/utilities and avoid running the SMC utility alongside Windows Wireless Zero Configuration. Use only one manager. This 802.11g adapter is 2.4 GHz only, so it will not see 5 GHz networks.
