Name: Proxim ORiNOCO 8494 Driver
Author: Proxim

Question 1

Install fails or rolls back on Windows 10/11?

Accepted Answer

The ORiNOCO 8494 USB wireless adapter uses a legacy driver package. Use the correct 32/64-bit installer, run it as Administrator, and temporarily disable driver signature enforcement if Windows blocks the unsigned driver.

Question 2

Adapter not detected?

Accepted Answer

Plug the 8494 directly into a rear USB 2.0 port, not a hub or USB 3.0 controller. Check Device Manager for “Unknown Device” or “Network Controller,” install the Proxim driver first, then insert the adapter and rescan.

Question 3

Version conflicts with existing WLAN drivers/utilities?

Accepted Answer

Uninstall any old ORiNOCO client utility and previous 8494 driver, choose “Delete the driver software,” reboot, then install only the matching Proxim package. Disable Windows automatic driver updates during installation if Windows replaces the driver.
