The PGR Scorpion driver from Point Grey Research enables Windows to communicate with the camera through its IEEE 1394 (FireWire) connection. Installing the correct driver helps compatible imaging software recognize the device and access its capture functions.

Key Features

  • IEEE 1394 connectivity: Provides the device-specific communication needed to use the PGR Scorpion over a compatible FireWire interface.
  • Camera recognition: Allows Windows and supported camera applications to identify the connected hardware.
  • Image acquisition support: Enables compatible software to receive images from the camera and access controls supported by the installed driver and application.
  • Windows compatibility options: Driver packages are available for supported Windows environments, including Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, and XP. Check the individual package details for the correct operating system and architecture.

How to Install

  1. Check your Windows version. Confirm whether your computer runs Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, or XP, and whether it uses a 32-bit or 64-bit system. Select a PGR Scorpion driver package that explicitly matches your setup.
  1. Prepare the FireWire connection. Make sure the computer has a compatible IEEE 1394 port or adapter, with its host controller recognized in Device Manager. Check the camera’s cable and any required external power supply.
  1. Download and extract the package. Save the appropriate driver locally. If it comes in a compressed archive, extract all files before proceeding, and review any included installation instructions.
  1. Install the driver. Run the supplied installer with administrator permissions and follow its prompts, including any directions about when to connect the camera. If no installer is provided, use Device Manager’s “Update driver” option and browse to the extracted driver folder.
  1. Verify camera operation. Restart Windows if requested, then connect the PGR Scorpion and check for warning icons in Device Manager. Open compatible Point Grey camera software or your imaging application to confirm that the camera is detected and can capture an image.

If detection fails, check the FireWire host controller, power supply, and cable before reinstalling. On newer Windows systems, confirm that both the camera driver and IEEE 1394 controller driver are compatible with your configuration.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or driver won’t load: Install the legacy Point Grey FireWire driver/FlyCapture package before connecting the PGR Scorpion. On 64-bit Windows, only disable driver signature enforcement if using an unsigned legacy package, then reboot.
  • Camera not detected: Check the IEEE-1394/FireWire host adapter, cable, and camera power. Use a known-good 6-pin FireWire cable and avoid unpowered hubs/adapters; confirm the Scorpion appears in Device Manager and FlyCapture.
  • Version conflicts: Remove older PGR/FlyCapture drivers first, then install one matching FlyCapture/driver version for the Scorpion. Don’t mix modern USB3/GigE packages with legacy FireWire drivers.
