Name: NEC PC98 Series Layout USB Keyboard Driver
Author: NEC

Question 1

Install fails?

Accepted Answer

Confirm the driver package matches Windows architecture (x86/x64), extract the INF, and run installation as administrator. If Windows rejects the NEC INF, check its digital signature rather than forcing unsigned installation.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Connect the NEC PC98 keyboard directly to a rear USB port, avoiding hubs, KVMs, or USB adapters that may drop HID reports. In Device Manager, remove any yellow-marked HID keyboard entry and rescan.

Question 3

Version/layout conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Uninstall older NEC PC98 or generic HID keyboard drivers, reboot, then reinstall. Select the PC-98 layout in Windows/keyboard settings and avoid running multiple layout utilities, which can remap Henkan/Muhenkan and other PC-98 keys incorrectly.
