The Microsoft iSCSI Initiator enables a Windows PC or server to connect to compatible storage over an IP network. Its built-in driver and supporting service allow remote iSCSI disks to appear as local storage, providing access to volumes hosted on a NAS, SAN, or other iSCSI target.

Key Features

  • Network-based block storage: Carries SCSI commands over TCP/IP so Windows can access remote disks through an Ethernet connection.
  • Target discovery and connection management: Lets you specify a storage target’s address, discover available targets, and manage iSCSI sessions.
  • Persistent connections: Supports saving selected targets so Windows can attempt to reconnect when the computer starts.
  • Authentication support: Offers CHAP authentication for compatible targets, helping control access to shared storage resources.

How to Install

  1. Check the Windows component first. Microsoft iSCSI Initiator is included with Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, so a separate driver download is generally unnecessary. Search for “iSCSI Initiator” in Windows or press Win + R, enter `iscsicpl`, and press Enter.
  1. Enable the supporting service. If prompted, allow Windows to start the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service. Administrator permissions may be required. For missing or damaged system components, use Windows servicing or repair tools rather than installing an unrelated storage driver.
  1. Prepare the storage connection. Confirm that your iSCSI target is configured and reachable over the network. Obtain its IP address or hostname and any required authentication details from your storage administrator. Ensure the target permits access from your computer’s initiator.
  1. Discover and connect to the target. In iSCSI Initiator, enter the target address under the Targets tab and select Quick Connect, or add a discovery portal under Discovery. Choose the intended target and configure authentication and persistent connection settings as needed.
  1. Verify the disk in Windows. Open Disk Management to confirm the connected storage is visible. Bring the disk online or assign a drive letter if appropriate. Initialize or format only a new, empty disk—these actions can affect existing data. Do not mount the same writable volume on multiple computers unless the storage setup explicitly supports coordinated shared access.

For reliable operation, use Microsoft-provided system updates appropriate to your Windows version and follow your storage vendor’s configuration guidance. Performance depends on the network connection, target configuration, and underlying storage hardware.
