The Microsoft ISATAP Adapter is a virtual network interface that helps Windows carry IPv6 traffic across an IPv4 network using the Intra-Site Automatic Tunnel Addressing Protocol. Its Microsoft-provided driver supports this transition technology rather than controlling a physical Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter. Availability and use vary across Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, and most modern networks do not require ISATAP.

Key Features

  • IPv6-over-IPv4 connectivity: Encapsulates IPv6 traffic in IPv4 packets for networks configured to use ISATAP.
  • Virtual network interface: Works alongside your existing network connection without requiring a separate hardware adapter.
  • Windows networking integration: Uses Microsoft networking components to support compatible IPv6 transition configurations.
  • Support for managed environments: Provides connectivity for legacy or enterprise networks where an administrator has specifically deployed ISATAP.

How to Install

  1. Confirm that ISATAP is needed. Check with your network administrator before adding or troubleshooting this adapter. If your internet connection works normally and your network does not use ISATAP, its absence usually requires no action.
  1. Check Windows for updates. Install applicable updates through Windows Update, then restart if prompted. The Microsoft ISATAP Adapter relies on Windows components and generally does not require a standalone driver download.
  1. Inspect Device Manager. Right-click Start and select Device Manager, or open it through Control Panel on Windows 7. Choose View > Show hidden devices, then expand Network adapters to look for Microsoft ISATAP Adapter entries.
  1. Update an existing adapter if necessary. If the adapter appears with a warning symbol, open its Properties and note the error code. Try Update driver and allow Windows to search automatically. Avoid using unrelated Ethernet drivers or forcing an incompatible package.
  1. Verify the network configuration. Restart the computer and check the adapter status. If it is missing or still reports an error, consult your administrator before changing tunnel settings. Windows 11 and Windows 10 systems may not expose this legacy adapter, so older installation instructions may not apply.
