The Linksys WRT54G is a wireless router that connects computers to a local network and shares an internet connection over Ethernet or Wi-Fi. It does not require a dedicated Windows driver: your computer’s network adapter driver handles communication with the router. For Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, check your Ethernet or wireless adapter first if you are having connection problems.

Key Features

  • Standard network connectivity: The WRT54G works through your computer’s Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter without a separate Linksys router driver.
  • Adapter-level support: The correct Windows network adapter driver enables your PC to detect available networks and establish a connection.
  • Browser-based configuration: Router settings, including the wireless network name and security options, are managed through a web browser rather than a driver utility.
  • Separate firmware maintenance: Router firmware runs on the WRT54G itself. Any firmware update must match its exact hardware revision; it is not a Windows driver package.

How to Install

  1. Identify the component that needs updating. Open Device Manager and expand “Network adapters” to find your PC’s Ethernet or wireless adapter. If you need router firmware instead, check the hardware version printed on the WRT54G’s label.
  1. Obtain the appropriate software. Download the network adapter driver from your computer or adapter manufacturer, selecting the version for Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7 as applicable. Do not install a driver intended for a different adapter.
  1. Install the adapter driver. Run its installer, or use “Update driver” in Device Manager and browse to the extracted driver folder. Restart your computer if prompted.
  1. Connect to the router. Plug an Ethernet cable into one of the WRT54G’s LAN ports, or select its wireless network in Windows and enter the configured password. Ethernet is useful when troubleshooting wireless compatibility.
  1. Verify connectivity and settings. Test access to the local network and internet. To adjust router settings, enter its gateway address in a browser; you can find that address under “Default Gateway” by running `ipconfig` in Command Prompt.

The WRT54G is an older router, so wireless security and compatibility can vary by hardware revision and firmware. If a modern PC cannot connect, check those limitations rather than assuming a router driver is missing.
