The Microsoft IEEE 1394 IP Network Device driver enables IP networking over a compatible IEEE 1394 connection, also known as FireWire, on Windows versions that support this feature. It allows a suitable FireWire interface to function as a network connection rather than only as a link for peripherals such as cameras or external drives.
Key Features
- Provides IP-over-1394 networking support on compatible Windows systems, allowing communication between appropriately configured computers through a FireWire cable.
- Integrates with Windows networking components so a supported 1394 network connection can be configured using familiar network settings.
- Supports recognition of the IEEE 1394 IP Network Device in Device Manager when the required hardware and Windows networking components are available.
- Serves a different purpose from a standard IEEE 1394 host controller driver: this component handles networking, not general FireWire peripheral access.
Compatibility matters: Windows XP includes native IP-over-1394 support, but Microsoft removed that feature starting with Windows Vista. If a download lists Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, and XP together, verify the package documentation carefully. A FireWire controller driver for a newer Windows version does not restore the older 1394 networking feature.
How to Install
- Confirm your Windows version and hardware. Open Device Manager and check the device name, status, and hardware IDs. Make sure you need the IEEE 1394 IP Network Device component rather than a driver for the FireWire host controller.
- Check the download’s compatibility. Review the package documentation for your exact Windows release and system architecture. Do not install an XP networking driver on Windows 10, 8.1, 7, or Vista simply because the interface uses FireWire.
- Prepare the driver files. Download a verified, compatible package and extract it if necessary. On Windows XP, the required component may already be supplied with Windows, so a separate download may not be needed.
- Install through Device Manager. Right-click the relevant device, choose the driver update option, and follow the prompts. If you have extracted driver files, direct the wizard to their folder. Avoid forcing installation when Windows reports a mismatch.
- Verify the connection. Restart if prompted, then check Device Manager for errors. On a supported Windows XP setup, review the 1394 connection in Network Connections and configure the connected computers’ IP settings as needed.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or Code 10/28: Confirm an IEEE 1394 OHCI host controller appears in Device Manager, enable 1394 in BIOS/UEFI, and install/repair the Microsoft 1394 OHCI controller driver first. If the wizard cannot find the IP Network Device, use “Add legacy hardware.”
- Device not detected: Test another FireWire cable/port, avoid unpowered hubs, check for an unknown 1394 device in Device Manager, and rescan. Verify 1394 networking is not disabled by policy.
- Version conflicts or Code 31/52: Remove third-party 1394 network/OHCI drivers, roll back to Microsoft
