Question 1

Installer fails or rolls back?

Accepted Answer

Disconnect the HVR-980, run the Hauppauge driver/WinTV installer as administrator, temporarily disable antivirus, reboot, then reconnect the tuner so Windows completes driver installation.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Use a direct rear USB 2.0 port (avoid hubs), check Device Manager for unknown/yellow-marked tuner entries, uninstall stale Hauppauge devices, rescan, and replug the HVR-980.

Question 3

Driver/software conflicts?

Accepted Answer

Uninstall older WinTV and Hauppauge tuner drivers first, reboot, then install the matching 32/64-bit package; don’t let Windows Update replace it with a generic driver or mix versions.
