The E MU Xboard 61 is a USB MIDI keyboard controller from E-MU, designed for playing software instruments and controlling music-production applications. Its driver enables Windows to communicate with the keyboard so compatible audio software can receive notes, performance gestures, and controller messages.

Key Features

  • USB MIDI connectivity: Allows compatible recording software and virtual instruments to receive MIDI input from the Xboard 61 over USB.
  • Expressive performance input: Carries note, velocity, pitch-bend, and modulation messages to instruments that support those controls.
  • Hands-on parameter control: Passes MIDI messages from the keyboard’s assignable controls, allowing you to map them to functions in your music software.
  • DAW integration: Makes the controller available as a MIDI input in compatible digital audio workstations. The Xboard 61 controls software instruments; it does not act as an audio interface.

How to Install

  1. Check the download’s compatibility. Before installing on Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, confirm that the selected driver package explicitly supports your Windows version and system architecture. Older driver releases may have limitations on newer systems.
  2. Prepare your computer. Close your recording applications and extract the downloaded files if they are compressed. Keep the Xboard 61 disconnected unless the package instructions say otherwise.
  3. Run the installer. Open the setup program, approve the Windows permission prompt if requested, and follow the on-screen instructions. Restart your computer if the installer requires it.
  4. Connect the keyboard. Plug the Xboard 61 into an available USB port, preferably directly on the computer for initial setup. Allow Windows to finish detecting and configuring the device.
  5. Enable MIDI input in your software. Open your DAW’s MIDI settings, select the Xboard 61 as an input, and load a software instrument. Arm or enable monitoring on the instrument track, then play a few notes to test the connection.

If the keyboard appears in Windows but produces no sound, check the instrument track’s MIDI input and your DAW’s audio output settings. MIDI carries performance instructions rather than sound, so a loaded instrument and a working audio output are both needed.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Installer fails or hangs: Uninstall any older E-MU software first, reboot, then run the Xboard 61 installer as Administrator. On Windows 10/11, try Windows 7 compatibility mode; if the keyboard is detected as a class-compliant USB MIDI device, the legacy driver may not be needed.
  • Device not detected: Connect the Xboard 61 directly to a rear USB 2.0 port, not a hub. Try another USB cable, power-cycle the keyboard, and check Device Manager for unknown/USB MIDI entries.
  • Driver/version conflicts: Remove old E-MU USB-MIDI drivers and hidden devices in Device Manager, reboot, then reinstall. In your DAW, reselect “E-MU Xboard 61” as the MIDI input after installation.
