The LSI OHCI 1394 Compliant Host Controller connects Windows to compatible IEEE 1394 devices, also known as FireWire or i.LINK equipment. Its Microsoft driver allows the operating system to recognize the controller and manage communication with connected hardware, such as digital camcorders, audio interfaces, and external storage devices.

Key Features

  • IEEE 1394 connectivity: Enables Windows to use the host controller for communication with compatible FireWire peripherals.
  • OHCI support: Provides driver support for the controller’s Open Host Controller Interface, the standard used by many IEEE 1394 adapters.
  • Windows device integration: Lets the controller appear in Device Manager, where you can check its status, review driver details, and troubleshoot connection problems.
  • Support across Windows versions: Driver options cover Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, and XP. Select a package that matches your operating system and architecture; a single download may not support every version.

How to Install

  1. Confirm the controller and Windows version. Open Device Manager and look under “IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers.” If the controller appears as an unknown device, check its hardware IDs in Properties before choosing a driver. Also confirm whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  2. Select the appropriate driver. Download the Microsoft driver package intended for the LSI OHCI 1394 Compliant Host Controller and your Windows version. Avoid installing a package meant for a different controller or operating system.
  3. Prepare the downloaded files. Extract the package if it is compressed. Save any open work and disconnect external FireWire equipment before changing the controller driver.
  4. Install or update the driver. Run the included installer if one is provided. Otherwise, right-click the controller in Device Manager, choose the driver update option, and browse to the extracted driver folder. Follow the prompts to complete installation.
  5. Restart and test the connection. Restart Windows if prompted, reconnect your FireWire device, and check that the controller has no warning icon in Device Manager. Test the peripheral using its normal application.

Some FireWire equipment also needs a separate manufacturer driver or application. If the controller is working but a connected device is not detected, check the cable, external power supply, and that device’s software requirements before replacing the host controller driver.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or driver is blocked: Windows may reject older 1394 OHCI packages. In Device Manager, use Update driver > Browse > Let me pick and select Microsoft > 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy), or install only a signed compatible package.
  • Device not detected: Confirm IEEE 139
