Question 1

Installer fails on newer Windows?

Accepted Answer

Compaq 420 driver packages were built for Windows 7/Vista. Run the SoftPaq/setup as administrator, try Windows 7 compatibility mode, or extract the package with 7-Zip and update the driver manually from Device Manager.

Question 2

Device not detected?

Accepted Answer

Install the chipset driver first, reboot, then install network, audio, and graphics drivers. For Wi-Fi, check the wireless switch and confirm the HP/Compaq WLAN driver matches the installed adapter.

Question 3

Version conflicts after Windows Update?

Accepted Answer

Windows may replace the Compaq driver with a generic one. In Device Manager, choose Update Driver > Browse > Let me pick, select the HP/Compaq driver, or roll back to the previous version if available.
