The cdrom.inf driver setup file helps Windows recognize and configure CD and DVD drives, including optical drives installed in HP computers. Although listed in the Audio category, cdrom.inf belongs to Windows’ optical-drive support rather than a sound-card driver; it allows compatible software to access discs, including audio CDs.
Key Features
- Optical-drive recognition: Provides installation information that Windows uses to configure compatible CD-ROM and DVD drives.
- Access to disc content: Supports the Windows driver configuration needed for reading data discs and accessing audio CDs through suitable applications.
- Built-in Windows integration: Works with Microsoft’s optical-drive components, so a separate HP-specific cdrom.inf download is generally unnecessary.
- Support across Windows versions: Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 include optical-drive support. Use the components supplied for your Windows version rather than copying driver files from another system.
How to Install
- Check the drive in Device Manager. Right-click Start and select Device Manager on newer Windows versions, or open it through Control Panel. Expand “DVD/CD-ROM drives” and look for your optical drive. If it is missing, check that the drive is connected and powered.
- Try the automatic driver update. Right-click the drive, select “Update driver” or “Update Driver Software,” and choose the automatic search option. Windows will look for an appropriate available driver.
- Use Windows Update. Check for updates and review any available optional driver updates. For an HP computer, use your exact model when checking for additional manufacturer support or firmware.
- Install a downloaded package only if it matches. If you have a verified, compatible driver package, extract it if needed. In Device Manager, choose the option to browse your computer for drivers and select the extracted folder. Do not replace files in the Windows system folders manually.
- Restart and test the drive. Insert a known-good disc and check whether it appears in File Explorer. If the drive reads data discs but audio CDs produce no sound, check your playback application, speakers, and audio driver separately.
A cdrom.inf installation will not resolve every optical-drive problem. Persistent errors can also result from damaged discs, hardware faults, or conflicts with disc-burning software.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or “best driver already installed”: Confirm the HP SoftPaq matches your exact optical-drive model and hardware ID. Run it as administrator, then use Device Manager > Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick > CD-ROM drives to force the HP INF.
- Drive not detected: Enable the optical drive in BIOS/UEFI, reseat SATA/power cables, and try another port. In Device Manager, scan for hardware changes; if the drive appears with a warning, uninstall it and reboot.
- Version conflicts after Windows Update: Microsoft’s generic cdrom.inf may replace the HP driver and cause Code 19/31/39. Roll back the driver if available, or uninstall the device and driver, reboot, and reinstall the HP package.
