CDC ACM Data is a USB interface used by compatible devices to exchange data through the Communications Device Class Abstract Control Model (CDC ACM). Its driver helps Windows recognize the interface and, when supported by the device, make it available to software as a virtual serial port. For Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, choose a driver package that matches both your hardware and your Windows version.

Key Features

  • USB communication support: Enables Windows to communicate with a compatible CDC ACM interface, commonly used for serial-style data transfer over USB.
  • Virtual COM port access: Where supported, allows terminal programs, configuration tools, and other serial applications to connect through an assigned COM port.
  • Device recognition: Helps Windows identify and configure the interface instead of leaving it listed as an unknown or unconfigured device.
  • Application connectivity: Provides the communication path needed by compatible software to send commands and receive data. Available functions depend on the connected hardware.

How to Install

  1. Confirm the hardware and Windows version. Open Device Manager and locate CDC ACM Data, which may appear under Other devices if its driver is missing. Check Properties > Details > Hardware Ids to help identify the correct package, and confirm whether your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  1. Choose a compatible driver. Use a package supplied by the manufacturer for your specific device and Windows version. Some CDC ACM devices work with a built-in Windows driver, so try Windows Update before installing a separate package.
  1. Install the driver files. Extract the download if necessary. Run the included installer and follow its instructions. If no installer is provided, right-click the device in Device Manager, select Update driver, and choose Browse my computer for drivers to select the extracted folder.
  1. Reconnect and verify detection. Restart Windows if prompted, then reconnect the device. Check that Device Manager no longer displays a warning icon. If a virtual serial port is created, note its COM number under Ports (COM & LPT).
  1. Test with the intended application. Open the software used with your hardware and select the appropriate port and communication settings. If detection fails, check the USB cable, try another USB port, and confirm that the driver matches the device’s hardware IDs.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • No COM port / device not detected: CDC ACM devices usually appear under Ports as “USB Serial Device (COMx).” If absent, try another USB port/cable, avoid unpowered hubs, and install the manufacturer’s signed INF. Check Device Manager for unknown devices or VID/PID mismatches.
  • Install fails or yellow warning: Codes 10/28/52 often mean a missing or incompatible driver. Run the installer as administrator, uninstall the CDC ACM device and delete its driver, reboot, then reinstall. Use signature-enforcement bypass only for testing.
  • Version conflicts / port busy: Remove older usbser.sys or vendor packages with `pnputil /delete-driver oemXX.inf /uninstall`, reboot, and close apps holding the COM port. If needed, reassign the COM number in Device Manager.
