The Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI) driver supports the Windows networking component used for Bluetooth serial-port-style communication. It helps compatible software exchange data with paired Bluetooth devices that use RFCOMM, rather than handling every Bluetooth function, such as audio playback.
Key Features
- RFCOMM communication support: Enables serial-style data connections over Bluetooth for compatible devices and applications.
- Windows integration: Allows the RFCOMM component to work within the Windows Bluetooth stack alongside the Bluetooth adapter’s driver.
- Support for compatible peripherals: Helps applications communicate with equipment that uses Bluetooth serial services, such as certain scanners, diagnostic tools, and GPS receivers.
- Driver repair and maintenance: Installing an appropriate driver can help resolve missing or damaged driver components, although pairing and connection problems may have other causes.
How to Install
- Check your Windows version and adapter. This page covers Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, but driver compatibility depends on the specific package and your hardware. Confirm your Windows version and whether your system requires a 32-bit or 64-bit package.
- Choose a trusted, compatible source. Check Windows Update first, since this RFCOMM component is commonly supplied with Windows. If an adapter-specific package is needed, obtain it from the manufacturer and review its supported operating systems.
- Install the available update or package. Apply the relevant Windows update, or run the manufacturer’s installer and follow its instructions. Keep Bluetooth enabled unless the installer asks you to turn it off.
- Use Device Manager if manual installation is required. Locate Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI), which may appear under Network adapters, right-click it, and select Update driver. Choose Browse my computer for drivers only if you have a compatible, extracted driver package.
- Restart and test the connection. Restart Windows if prompted, then reconnect your Bluetooth peripheral and test it with the application that uses its serial service. If a warning remains in Device Manager, check the main Bluetooth adapter driver as well.
A working RFCOMM driver does not add Bluetooth capability to a computer without a supported Bluetooth adapter. It also does not guarantee compatibility with peripherals that require separate software or a different Bluetooth profile.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or rolls back: The RFCOMM TDI driver must match your Windows version/architecture and the vendor’s Bluetooth stack. Disconnect the Bluetooth adapter, remove existing Bluetooth/RFCOMM entries in Device Manager (including hidden devices), reboot, then run the vendor package as administrator.
- Device not detected / no serial port: Confirm the Bluetooth radio is on and the Bluetooth Support Service is running. Remove and re-pair the device, then check Device Manager for an unknown “Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI)” and update it using the vendor driver.
- Version conflicts / Code 10, 31, or 43: An inbox Microsoft RFCOMM driver or older OEM Bluetooth suite can conflict. Uninstall the old vendor Bluetooth software and RFCOMM device, restart, and install only the matching vendor package; avoid mixing generic and OEM drivers.
