The Apple Mobile Device Ethernet driver allows Windows to recognize the network connection created when a compatible iPhone or iPad shares its cellular data over USB. It supports USB tethering through Personal Hotspot, giving your PC another way to access the internet when Wi-Fi or a wired network is unavailable. For Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, choose an Apple driver package that matches your operating system and system architecture.
Key Features
- USB network recognition: Helps Windows detect a connected Apple device as a network adapter when USB tethering is enabled.
- Personal Hotspot connectivity: Provides the driver component needed to use a compatible iPhone or cellular-capable iPad as an internet connection.
- Windows networking integration: Lets the tethered connection work through Windows network settings alongside your other adapters.
- Connection troubleshooting: Installing a compatible driver can resolve missing-adapter or driver-related errors that prevent USB internet sharing.
How to Install
- Check compatibility before downloading. Confirm your Windows version and whether your PC uses a 32-bit or 64-bit system. Select a package that explicitly supports that configuration; newer Apple software may not support Windows 8 or 7.
- Install the required Apple components. If the download includes an installer, run it and follow its instructions. USB tethering may also require compatible Apple device-support software, commonly installed with iTunes for Windows.
- Connect and authorize your device. Use a USB cable that supports data transfer, unlock your iPhone or iPad, and select “Trust” if prompted. Make sure cellular data and Personal Hotspot are enabled. Hotspot availability depends on your device and mobile plan.
- Update the adapter manually if necessary. Open Device Manager and look under Network adapters or Other devices for Apple Mobile Device Ethernet or an unrecognized connected device. Right-click it, choose “Update driver,” then “Browse my computer for drivers,” and select the extracted driver folder.
- Verify internet access. Restart your PC if requested, reconnect the Apple device, and check Windows network settings. If the connection is still missing, try another USB port or data cable and confirm that Personal Hotspot remains enabled.
USB tethering uses your mobile data allowance. If Windows recognizes the adapter but cannot reach the internet, check the Apple device’s cellular connection before reinstalling the driver.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Install fails or rolls back: Usually caused by a stale Apple Mobile Device Support package. Uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support and Bonjour (keep iTunes if needed), reboot, then reinstall the latest iTunes/Apple Devices app or Apple Mobile Device Support.
- Device not detected / no Ethernet adapter: Check the cable and USB port, unlock the iPhone/iPad and tap Trust, then restart Apple Mobile Device Service (`services.msc`) and re-plug. In Device Manager, scan for hardware changes.
- Version conflicts after iTunes/Apple Devices update: Remove duplicate Apple Mobile Device drivers in Device Manager, reboot, and install only the current Apple package. Avoid mixing Microsoft Store Apple Devices with legacy iTunes components.
