The Altera USB Blaster driver lets Windows recognize the USB programming cable used to connect a PC to compatible Altera FPGA and CPLD hardware. It provides the communication link that supported development tools, such as Quartus Programmer, need to detect the cable and program a connected device. For Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, choose a driver package that explicitly supports your operating system and cable revision.

Key Features

  • USB cable recognition: Enables Windows to identify the Altera USB Blaster as a programming interface rather than leaving it listed as an unknown device.
  • Programming-tool communication: Allows compatible Altera development software to communicate with the cable for supported programming and configuration tasks.
  • JTAG access: Supports communication with compatible target hardware through the cable’s JTAG connection when the board is correctly powered and connected.
  • Manual driver installation: Compatible driver packages can be installed through Device Manager when Windows does not automatically locate the required files.

How to Install

  1. Verify the package before downloading. Confirm that it is intended for your Altera USB Blaster model and Windows version. USB-Blaster and USB-Blaster II may require different drivers. Although some listings associate this device with Altec Lansing, it is an Altera programming interface; use the hardware identity to select the correct package.
  2. Prepare the driver files. Extract the downloaded archive, or locate the USB-Blaster driver folder supplied with your compatible Quartus installation. Follow any included installation instructions.
  3. Connect the cable. Plug it into a USB port on your PC, then open Device Manager. Look for the programming cable under USB devices, other devices, or an entry marked with a warning icon.
  4. Install the driver. Right-click the matching entry, select Update driver, and choose Browse my computer for drivers. Point Windows to the appropriate driver folder and complete the prompts. If Windows rejects the package, obtain a supported signed driver rather than disabling security checks.
  5. Check the connection. Open Quartus Programmer and look for the cable in Hardware Setup. Connect and power the target board before attempting device detection or programming.

If the cable is not detected, try another USB port and check both the USB connection and the target-board wiring. Driver installation alone does not supply power to the target hardware.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Install fails or driver won’t bind: Run the Quartus/Intel FPGA Programmer installer as administrator and install the USB-Blaster driver from `…driversusb-blaster`. If Windows blocks it, temporarily disable driver signature enforcement, then point Device Manager to that folder.
  • Device not detected: Try a direct USB 2.0 port and a known-good cable; avoid hubs. Power-cycle the board, then check Device Manager for “Altera USB-Blaster” (VID_09FB/PID_6001). If missing, uninstall the device and rescan/reinstall the driver.
  • Version conflicts: Remove older standalone USB-Blaster/Quartus drivers first. In Device Manager, uninstall the device and select “Delete the driver software,” reboot, then reinstall the driver matching your Quartus version. Avoid mixing USB-Blaster and USB-Blaster II driver packages.
